When it comes to health and wellness, figuring out where to start can feel like the classic chicken-and-egg scenario. Do you revamp your diet first, sign up for a gym membership, or simply start drinking more water? It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options. But fear not! This guide will help you unravel the wellness puzzle, starting with the most impactful element – your nutrition.
Nutrition: The Cornerstone of Wellness
You’ve probably heard the saying, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet,” and it’s spot-on. Nutrition is the foundation of good health. Here’s how to begin:
- Start Simple: Focus on whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Portion Control: Learn to listen to your body’s hunger cues. Overeating, even healthy foods, can be counterproductive.
- Plan Your Meals: Meal planning prevents last-minute unhealthy choices. Pinterest has a wealth of health recipes, but I also like to enlist the help of my friends with a good Facebook post.
- Counting Calories: I’m not great at doing this, but if you’re trying to lose weight, an eye-opener is to track your calories for a week…truthfully. Measuring every little thing can be annoying, but once you realize you’ve been using 2-3 servings of dressing on your “healthy” salad, you’ll see why you’re not seeing progress. I usually use MyFitnessPal for tracking, but many other options exist.
A little note on this, too. I am not a fan of diets that restrict foods because when we label foods as bad, it can mess with our mindset. I’ve done many in the past, so use my failures as your lesson. Simply be mindful if you’re thinking of hopping on the latest diet fad, and instead, create a nutrition plan that is sustainable for your life.
The Role of Exercise in Your Health and Wellness
Exercise, particularly weight training, plays a crucial role in overall health. It improves muscle strength, boosts metabolism, and enhances mood.
- Beginner-Friendly Approach: If you’re new to the gym, consider hiring a personal trainer to tailor a workout plan to your needs and teach proper techniques.
- Consistency is Key: Ease into a plan (or you’ll be sore and not show up for day 2).
Find 4 times a week where you can do 30 minutes of exercise. Perhaps this is twice during the week and then on the weekend. Use the time to or from work to pop into a gym (having one on your commute makes it easier to get to) or sneak in a workout over your lunch break. We purchased a set of adjustable dumbbells for those days we couldn’t get to the gym.
Beyond Diet and Exercise
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water is crucial for bodily functions. Aim for 8-10 glasses per day. Everyone in my family has their own bottle (although somehow they all end up drinking from mine!).
- Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. I have learned my body needs 8-9 hours to feel refreshed, whereas my husband can do 7 hours without any issues. And don’t kid yourself, you really do need more than 7 hours!
- Supplementation: When considering supplements, Plexus products stand out for their focus on improving gut health. A healthy gut is crucial for optimal digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall well-being. If you have problems with regularity, skin issues, weight, sleep, or energy, incorporating Plexus into your routine can be a significant step towards a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
